LEA

(DE)

„I don’t have a problem talking to myself / only have a problem to understand myself“, LEA sings. It’s so accurate, so disarming, painful yet beautiful. This sentence could be the essence of „Vakuum“.

On her debut album, LEA is looking for the soliloquy, tests her limits and what is more, despairs and grows. LEA’s texts are magnifiers. Microscopically, she dissects emotions, allows herself to lose track of the bigger picture, allows herself to be the centre of her own life. Eight years ago, these were the first steps for LEA. With fifteen years, she released first videos on YouTube, tentative self-presentations, convincing and natural. As the videos started collecting clicks after clicks, the focus still remained on her piano, her voice and her words. The access to LEA’s music was given to the listeners with her first videos, especially because they were wholehearted and very intimate.

Her debut succeeds to translate this immediacy and the upright breakable into Neopop. The production of Matthias Mania and Daniel Großmann is trembling, converts into big waves that lastly break again to become small and earnest. It almost seems as if „Vakuum“ also paints the musical way of LEA‘s thoughts, the change of light and dark, of highs and lows, wary but also demanding and explorative. The vulnerability of LEA‘s thoughts, her delicateness but also her strength appear over again. The strength to face the sterile in the digital era with naturalness, to follow the impulses of the ego, the calls out of the evacuated room.

But even if „Vakuum“ is a monologue, a constant quest for the ego, the plumbing of her own emotions, LEA always includes us listeners. At the end of the album, the big yesterday united with brittle intimacy, we are all left alone with our thoughts. It buzzes in our heads, probably even more than before. LEA gives us courage to follow these thoughts, to fail and to grow on them. She gives us courage to talk to ourselves, even if we don’t understand at first.
