Hein Cooper

(AUS)

In 2015, songwriter HEIN COOPER released his debut EP in his home country Australia and landed in the playlist of the renowned radio station Triple J straightaway. He toured through Germany, France, Great Britain, Australia, Canada, America, Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland – amongst Sophie Hunger, Bear’s Den, Lukas Graham and Kim Churchill – and successfully completed his first show with a full band at the Falls Festival in Australia. In 2016 his debut album „The Art Of Escape“ followed and he went on his big headliner tour through Germany in fall.

The son of an Australian and a Dutchwoman (which is why his name is Hein) found his way to music through puberal rivalry. „When I was 14, my best friend started to play the guitar“, he remembers. „Since we were both constantly trying to outlay each other, I also bought one and learned the same songs. My friend soon stopped playing, but since then I was obsessed with music“. Soon COOPER started to write his own songs. He moved to Sydney and started to play cover gigs to earn money. Five nights a week, three hours per evening. At a support show of the Canadian band Half Moon Run in 2013, he was discovered by their manager and was invited to Montreal promptly, to continue working on his songs.

In the recording studio of his record label Indica Records in Montreal, „The Art Of Escape“ was created. Inspired by artists like Angus & Julia Stone, Radiohead, Ben Howard, Bon Iver and Beck, COOPER recorded ten impressive and diverse songs with producer Marcus Paguin (Arcade Fire, The National), moving between Indie and Pop. Reduced acoustic ballads like the title song of the album build a contrast to upbeat numbers like ‚Rusty‘ or ‚Overflow‘.

„The reason why the songs sound so different is because I always try to find a new style that supports the feeling and the emotion of the particular song“, says COOPER. „We recorded ‚The Art of Escape‘ live in one take, with one mic, my voice and an acoustic guitar. It was the perfect presentation for this thoughtful song. ‚Overflow“ on the opposite needed a full, hyped up sound.“

Not only are COOPER’s songs musically diverse, but also textual. ‚Dopamine‘ for example is dedicated to his home town Milton. „Only 13.000 people live in the whole region. It’s located on the coast, surrounded by woods, it‘s a really magical place. When I come back, I always have the feeling that everything in the world is okay“, he says. „As I moved to Sydney and collected more interpersonal experiences, my themes expanded and lighthearted songs like ‚All My Desires‘ resulted“. It is about everything that COOPER doesn’t have, but would like to have. Superpowers for example.

‚Water‘ and ‚Cursed My Life‘ on the opposite are about realationships and broken hearts, while ‚Polar Bears“ and ‚The Art Of Escape‘ deal with changes and escapism. „I wrote ‚The Art Of Escape‘ when I lived in Sydney and my life didn’t go the way I wanted it to“, he reveals. „I played these cover gigs and couldn’t move forward. Today I know, that that time taught me the best lessons.“

In May he will return to Germany for four shows.
